Accounting B.B.A.

The Accounting program prepares the accounting major for a career in the accounting profession, either public, private, or governmental. In addition, the accounting curriculum is designed to develop the accounting student's ability to work effectively, to become mentally disciplined, to communicate orally and in writing, to be aware of professional responsibilities, to develop an appreciation of the accountant's high standard of integrity, and objectivity in reporting. The program also provides the non-accounting major with basic accounting knowledge for use in a chosen major field and personal life.

The Accounting major is designed for the person who is analytical and seeks a career that can branch into almost any area of business. The two areas (Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting) of emphasis in this major lead graduates toward the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification, respectively. 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the accounting cycle and the ability to correctly record and post transactions
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to apply principles of taxation contained in the Internal Revenue Code
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of cost accounting methods used to evaluate and project business performance.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply auditing concepts and procedures (Public Accounting Option)
  6. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of cost management and control, including cost volume profit analysis and process costing (Managerial Accounting Option)

Transfer Agreements

Public Accounting 

A person with this degree seeks a career in public accounting with careers available in auditing, consulting, or tax preparation. In the State of Oklahoma, prospective CPAs must have 150 hours of academic credit prior to sitting for the examination. This track is designed for students seeking a career in the public accounting sector and will pursue the CPA certification.

Managerial Accounting 

A person with this degree seeks a career in the corporate sector providing services related to company operations, including development of financial statements, analysis of costs and operations. An increasing proportion of time is spent on evaluation and analysis of financial information. This track is designed for students seeking a career in the private accounting sector and will pursue the CMA certification.

Course Information

General Education - 46 hours

Students seeking Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees are encouraged to select these courses while completing General Education requirements.

Business Core - 42 hours

The following core of courses is required of all business students, except as modified for Hospitality and Tourism Management. See major plan of study on the following pages.

At least 21 of the 42 credits in the BBA core must be earned at NSU.

Accelerated B.B.A. Accounting to M.S. Accounting and Financial Analysis

Note:  Please refer to Accelerated Bachelor's to Master's Degree Program for complete information concerning the Accelerated Degree Program.  Refer to the current Graduate Catalog for master's degree requirements.

IMPORTANT:

  • Students admitted to the Accelerated B.B.A. Accounting to M.S. Accounting and Financial Analysis degree program will complete up to 12 hours of graduate level credit to apply toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.
  • A minimum grade of C is required for all 5000 level graduate courses.
  • Students who do not follow the approved degree plan may become ineligible to continue in the accelerated degree program. 
  • Prior to completing the undergraduate degree, if the undergraduate GPA, graduate GPA and/or overall GPA fall below a 3.00, the student becomes ineligible to continue in the ADP.
  • Students may withdraw from an approved accelerated degree pathway.  Graduate credit hours completed prior to the student withdrawing or becoming ineligible to continue in the ADP apply toward the undergraduate degree only.

Fundamentals of Accounting Certificate

This certificate is embedded in the Accounting, B.B.A. program.

The certificate in Accounting Fundamentals prepares degree or non-degree students and students with business or non-business degrees for work jobs in accounting, finance, banking, business administration or involving business administration. The skills learned will help students obtain accounting and administrative jobs or transition to administrative jobs. Students learn about the fundamental concepts and methods of analysis in accounting. This program prepares students to utilize these concepts and analysis in making informed decisions in their workplaces. The curriculum develops the student's ability to work effectively with accounting data and managerial decision-makers; to become mentally disciplined and to communicate accounting data and ideas graphically, orally, and in writing; and to meet the needs of internal management for accounting information that would help achieve organizational objectives.

At least 25 percent of the coursework applied to this embedded certificate must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.

Certificate Requirements - 15 hrs

Tax Compliance Certificate

This certificate is embedded in the Accounting, B.B.A. program.

The certificate is embedded in the public accounting program.  This program prepares students to become competent professionals in the areas of tax preparation, compliance and planning.  Students who complete this certificate have the necessary knowledge to provide essential services in the areas of tax preparation and payroll processing, for traditional accounting offices and online services. 

At least 25 percent of the coursework applied to this embedded certificate must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.

Required Courses - 15 hours

A CPA is a certified public accountant who is licensed by a state board of accountancy. To earn the CPA license, applicants are required to demonstrate knowledge and competence by meeting high educational standards, passing the CPA exam and completing a specific amount of general accounting experience. The two most important aspects of becoming a CPA are passing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting licensing requirements in the state where you want to practice. Additional fees apply for both testing and licensure. Students are encouraged to talk with their faculty advisor about the steps to become a certified public accountant.
