The Finance major is divided into two areas of emphasis: The Financial Management Emphasis and the Financial Planning Emphasis.

Credential Requirements

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM, and CFP(with flame logo)®, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements. Northeastern State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM, and CFP(with flame logo)® certification marks. CFP Certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as the Northeastern State University Financial Planning Area of Emphasis (a CFP Board-Registered Program), have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements. Additional fees apply for both testing and licensure. Students are encouraged to talk with their faculty mentor about the steps to become a Certified Financial Planner.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of financial management.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of investments and securities markets.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of international financial management.
  4. Score at the 50th percentile or higher on the Financial Management section of the business policy simulation (Financial Management option).
  5. Demonstrate competence in the major areas of financial planning (Financial Planning option).

Financial Management Emphasis

The Financial Management Emphasis prepares students to perform effectively in a variety of financial management activities. Graduates can pursue careers in small business, corporate financial management, banking, insurance, investment management, real estate, and mortgage companies. Course work involves the study of financial instruments, financial practices, the structure and functions of financial institutions, the legal and economic context within which financial operations are conducted, investment analysis, portfolio management, business forecasting, and economic analysis.

Financial Planning Emphasis

The Financial Planning Emphasis prepares students for careers as financial advisors. Financial planning is one of the fastest growing segments of the financial serviced industry. Career opportunities are found in financial planning firms of various sizes, law firms, brokerage firms, insurance companies, and accounting firms. Financial Planners are also hired by corporations to organize and maintain employee benefit plans and by bank trust departments. Course work centers around wealth creation and retention. Areas of study include investments, risk management, estate planning, taxation, and analysis of retirement-based programs.

General Education - 46 hours

Students seeking Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees are encouraged to select these courses while completing General Education requirements.

Business Core - 42 hours

The following core of courses is required of all business students, except as modified for Hospitality and Tourism Management. See major plan of study on the following pages.

At least 21 of the 42 credits in the BBA core must be earned at NSU.
