Dr. Mfon Akpan Presents AI-Focused Research at National Accounting Conference
Dr. Mfon Akpan’s research paper, “Predicting Critical Audit Matters: Leveraging AI for Enhanced Risk Assessment,” was accepted for presentation at the Strategic and Emerging Technologies (SET) Research Workshop during the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting this August in Chicago. This prestigious venue highlights cutting-edge work in the accounting field, and Dr. Akpan’s contribution showcases how technology continues to transform the profession.
In discussing what inspired his research, Dr. Akpan shared that his goal was to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) could support auditors in the audit process—particularly in areas involving risk assessment and professional judgment. “I wanted to find out if AI could do more than automate tasks and actually help auditors make better, more informed decisions,” he explained.
Dr. Akpan’s study revealed that while AI may not yet match human auditors in professional judgment, it serves as a valuable tool that enhances that judgment. “AI can process and analyze large amounts of data much faster than humans, helping auditors identify risks more effectively,” he said. “The takeaway is that AI adds value to the audit process by supporting and strengthening human expertise.”
Reflecting on his presentation at the SET Research Workshop, Dr. Akpan described the experience as both engaging and energizing. “The audience asked thoughtful, forward-thinking questions. Their feedback helped me refine my paper and also shaped the direction for my next research project,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Dr. Akpan hopes his findings encourage others to view AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement for human judgment. “AI can quickly evaluate financial text, detect patterns, and highlight potential risks. It has the potential to make the audit process more efficient, more insightful, and ultimately more valuable for clients and the public,” he said.
Dr. Akpan’s research continues to advance the conversation around the responsible and effective integration of AI in accounting—an area of growing importance for both practitioners and educators in the field.
